Frequently Asked Questions

Section 1: Pricing, Estimates & Getting Started (5)

The cost of your move depends on the size of your move, distance, access, packing needs, and timing. We provide transparent pricing through free, accurate estimates so there are no surprises on moving day; local, long-distance, and international moves are priced differently based on scope and services.

We serve Maryland, Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and beyond. For local moves, we operate throughout the Baltimore–DC metro area, including Montgomery County, Howard County, Frederick County, Prince George’s County, Carroll County, Anne Arundel County, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William Countries, and Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park. We have facilities in Clarksburg & Elkridge, Maryland and Alexandria Virginia. For long-distance moves, we handle interstate relocations across the country, and our international moving team coordinates overseas shipments. We also serve government and corporate clients.

We recommend booking 4–8 weeks in advance, especially during peak moving season (May through September). Moves in the Washington, DC and Baltimore metro areas book quickly — particularly weekends and end-of-month dates — so scheduling early gives you the best choice of dates. If you need to move on short notice, contact us for availability; we accommodate last-minute moves when possible. For more scheduling advice, see our guide on why to start the moving process early.

Yes. Moyer & Sons Moving & Storage is a fully licensed and insured professional moving company. We comply with all federal and state regulations for local, interstate, and international moves and offer valuation coverage options for added peace of mind.

Yes. We offer free, no-obligation moving estimates for residential, commercial, long-distance, and international moves. You can schedule an estimate by calling our office at 301-869-3896 or through our website. One of our experienced Moving Consultants will visit your home or office — in person or virtually — to assess your belongings, access points, and any special requirements. The consultation covers everything from furniture and furnishings to additional services like packing and storage, so you receive an accurate, detailed quote.

Section 2: Your Move Team & Protection (5)

Yes. We offer full packing, partial packing, and unpacking services for both residential and commercial moves. Full packing means our crew handles everything — from kitchen cabinets to closets — typically the day before or the morning of your move. Partial packing lets you handle the easy stuff while we take care of fragile, bulky, or hard-to-pack items. We also sell professional-grade boxes, paper, tape, and specialty containers if you prefer to pack yourself.

While damage is rare, we offer valuation coverage options and a clear claims process if an issue occurs. Your Moving Consultant will review coverage levels with you before moving day so you understand your options and protections in advance.

We use thick moving pads, breathable stretch wrap, and custom crating to safeguard your furniture during transport. Our crews also lay floor runners, pad doorways, banisters, and walls, during loading and unloading to prevent damage to your home. For items that need extra attention — like glass tabletops, marble, or artwork — our professional packing team uses specialty materials and techniques. Every crew is trained to treat your home the way we’d treat our own.

For safety and legal reasons, professional movers cannot transport hazardous materials. Common non-allowable items include gasoline, propane tanks, paint thinner, fireworks, loaded firearms, ammunition, pesticides, car batteries, and perishable food. Prescription medications and important documents (passports, financial records) should be kept with you during any relocation. If you’re unsure about a specific item, please review with your Moving Consultant during your free estimate and they will let you know what can and cannot be transported.

Most of our movers are trained, full-time Moyer & Sons employees. In some situations we use vetted subcontractors who must meet the same standards for training, safety, accountability, and customer service as our employees; all crew members are background-checked, drug-tested, and professionally trained.

Section 3: Trucks, Storage & Logistics (4)

Yes. We can pick up your belongings, place them in secure storage at our Clarksburg or Elkridge facilities, and deliver them when you’re ready — whether that’s a few days or several months later. This storage-in-transit service is popular for clients dealing with construction delays, closing date gaps, temporary housing, or phased relocations..

Our 24-hour secure storage facilities are located in Clarksburg, Maryland (Montgomery County, convenient to the I-270 corridor and DC metro area) and Elkridge, Maryland (Howard County, convenient to the Baltimore area and BWI corridor). Together they offer more than 45,000 square feet of secure storage space.

Yes. We provide secure short-term and long-term storage for both residential and commercial clients. Short-term storage works well for staged moves, closing date gaps, or renovations — you can store for as little as a few days. Long-term storage is available month-to-month with no long-term contract required. Our facilities in Clarksburg and Elkridge offer more than 45,000 square feet of 24-hour secure storage.

Yes. Moyer & Sons owns and maintains our entire fleet — from vans for TINY moves to full-size tractor-trailers for large homes and commercial relocations. Owning our equipment means we control the maintenance schedule, cleanliness, and safety of every vehicle. You’ll recognize our trucks by the Moyer Blue color scheme that’s been a fixture on Maryland and DC-area roads since 1969.

Section 4: Specialty Items & Scheduling (5)

Yes. We have extensive experience moving pianos (uprights and grands), antiques, fine art, gun safes, marble tabletops, chandeliers, and other high-value or oversized items. Our crews use specialized equipment and custom protection methods to ensure safe transport of high-value or delicate belongings. If an item requires special handling, your Moving Consultant will note it during the estimate and make sure the right equipment are assigned on moving day.

Yes. We offer weekend and limited holiday moving services, subject to availability. These high-demand dates book quickly, especially during peak season, so we recommend scheduling as early as possible.

Move duration depends on the size of your move, distance, access, and the services requested. Local moves in Maryland or DC are often completed in one to two days, while long-distance and international moves vary based on mileage and logistics.

We understand that closing dates shift and plans change — it’s one of the most common parts of the moving process. If your date needs to be adjusted, contact your Moving Consultant or our office at 301-869-3896 as soon as possible. We’ll do our best to accommodate the change, subject to availability. The earlier you let us know, the easier it is to reschedule, especially during peak season (May–September).

In most cases, light items like clothing and linens can stay in dresser drawers. However, you should remove anything fragile, heavy, or loose — such as jewelry, glass items, or books — to prevent shifting during transport. You do not need to disassemble furniture yourself; our crews handle bed frames, dining tables, desks, and other items that need to come apart, and reassemble them at your destination. For more preparation tips, see our professional moving tips guide.

Section 5: Commercial & Office Moving (3)

Section 6: Estimates, Protection & Trust (6)

You can review our complete terms and conditions here. These cover valuation coverage, liability, payment terms, cancellation policies, and other important details about your move. If you have questions about any specific terms, your Moving Consultant will be happy to walk you through them during your estimate appointment.

Look for these red flags: the company has no physical address, they demand a large upfront deposit before the move, an unusually low the estimate, and they won’t do an in-home or virtual survey. A legitimate mover will be licensed, insured, and transparent about pricing. Moyer & Sons has served the Maryland and DC area since 1969 as an ATA-certified ProMover with a track record you can verify through hundreds of customer reviews. For more guidance, see our post on how to vet a moving company.

Yes. We offer junk removal services for items you don’t want to bring to your new home or office. We also work with local community organizations to donate usable furniture and household goods whenever possible, so your unwanted items find a good home rather than a landfill. Your Moving Consultant can coordinate junk removal as part of your move or as a standalone service.

Your Moving Consultant will provide a personalized checklist, but here are the essentials: confirm parking and building access for the truck, finish packing or confirm your packing service details, set aside a bag of essentials you’ll need on day one (medications, chargers, toiletries, important documents), and communicate any last-minute inventory or schedule changes to your crew lead. For a more detailed guide, check out our 10 professional moving tips and our moving resources page.

Before any move please check with your agent or homeowners’ insurance policy. Moyer & Sons does have additional valuation packages available. Please contact us at 301-869-3896 or your Moving Consultant with any questions.

A binding estimate guarantees the price based on the agreed-upon scope of work, while a non-binding estimate may change if the actual move requirements differ from the original estimate. Your Moving Consultant will explain both options and recommend what best fits your move.
